Error description

  • A WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition (FTE) directory
resource monitor fails to trigger its associated task
when the detected resource is a symbolic link (otherwise
    known as a soft link).
    .
An FFDC is subsequently generated by the WebSphere MQ
FTE agent on which the directory resource monitor is
    running.
    .
    Example:
    Consider the directory /files/transfers/invoices/to_send
is being polled by a WebSphere MQ FTE directory resource
monitor to match files with wildcard pattern
    "invoice_???.txt".
This directory contains a symbolically linked file,
named "invoice_123.txt", that points to the actual file
    location /files/invoices/invoice_123.txt". The directory
resource monitor is triggered but fails to start its
associated task. The FFDC generated contains the
    following information:
    .
    Filename:

    FFDC.FTE.20130715143717174.6068982721733078821.log

Local fix

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    USERS AFFECTED:
This issue affects users of WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition
who use symbolic links to files in directories monitored by
WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition resource monitors.

    Platforms affected:
    MultiPlatform

    ****************************************************************
    PROBLEM SUMMARY:
When determining the number of sub-directories to recurse into
from the root monitoring directory, the WebSphere MQ File
Transfer Edition code used the canonical path from the entries
that matched the file pattern on which to filter. As these
matching files could be symbolically linked, the length of the
canonical path (the actual location of these files) can be
much longer or shorter than the length of the path to the
monitored directory. If this is the case, the WebSphere MQ FTE
code would throw a java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException, an
FFDC would be generated and the task associated with the
    resource monitor not triggered.

Problem conclusion

  • The WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition code has been modified to
ensure sub-directory recursion depths are measured from the
directory polled by a WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition
resource monitor and not that of the location where symbolically
    linked files actually reside.
