Error description
The IBM Systems Director resource explorer shows the following warning message for a Qlogic FC3171 or other switch, "Unable to set Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) notification destination: Automatic configuration failed. To manually define SNMP settings, open System Configuration > Current Configuration and then edit the Protocol Configuration for the desired switch" However, if the user configures SNMP settings through Current Configuration or by logging into the switch, SNMP traps are still not displayed in the event log. This might happen because of environment issues or access issues. Users can resolve this by restoring SNMP on the switch to it's default state. Impact: SNMP informational messages sent by the switch are not available to the user.
Local fix
There is no usage change that will avoid this issue.
Problem summary
Environment issues with the SNMP configuration on the switch or access issues to the switch from IBM Systems Director can lead to configuration/connection problems between the switch and IBM Systems Director. To resolve the switch warning message and to allow SNMP traps sent by the switch to be displayed by IBM Systems Director, the following steps will restore SNMP on the switch to it's default state. This will allow IBM Systems Director to configure SNMP to the correct settings on the switch by rediscovering/unlocking the switch. 1) From the Settings option in the navigation tree, select Network Management Preferences 2) On the select Network Management Preferences page, verify that the checkbox to "Automatically assign the management server as an SNMP trap destination for newly discovered and unlocked network devices" is checked. 3) SSH to the switch and log in. 4) Use the Qlogic switch command 'start admin' to enter admin mode. 5) Restore SNMP to default settings on the Qlogic switch using the command 'reset snmp'. Press y to confirm the reset. 6) From the IBM Systems Director console, re-access the switch and follow either of these paths, a) Remove the switch from the IBM Systems Director Resource Explorer. b) Collect inventory on the chassis that manages the switch. c) Once the inventory completes and the switch has been re-discovered, verify the Access column for the switch shows OK. d) Run inventory on the switch. OR a) Revoke access to the switch b) Unlock the switch c) Verify the Access column for the switch shows OK. The information message "The management server's Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) trap destination set successfully." should now be displayed for the switch.
