Error description
The Tivoli Storage Manager server documentation specifies that only one source can access a library in the DEFINE LIBRARY command documentation. However, it is possible to define a path from more than one source type to the same library device on a library manager. This should be prevented. For example, a user defined a path from the library manager and library client to the same library device. This is the query path output: TSMLM TAPELIB2 /dev/lb2 YES TSMLC TAPELIB2 /dev/lb2 YES There should never be more than a single path to a library device from the same source type. In this case, the source type is SERVER. There should only be a single path defined from a machine identified as a library manager or data mover. This condition might cause errors similar to this: ANR8840E Unable to open device /dev/lb0 with file handle 16 and PVRRC 153. (SESSION: XXXX) Note that in this case "file handle 16" should read "errno 16". A trace will show this. Errno 16 is defined as: #define EBUSY 16 /* Resource busy */ This error can also be caused by other software opening the library device. The library manager or data mover should be the only machine(s) which open the library device. It is not supported to allow other machines or software to open the library device while in use by the Tivoli Storage Manager software. Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected: 5.4, 5.5, 6.1, 6.2 on all platforms Initial Impact: Medium Additional Keywords: TSM MSGANR8840E error number 16 define path srct destt
Local fix
Do not define more than one path to a library device from the same source type.
