Error description

  • During the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 6.1 upgrade using
the upgrade utilities, in some cases the retention initiation
date for backup sets to NULL, causing the upgraded server to
think that the backup sets are to be retained forever. Which
means that the backupsets are to be retained for unlimited
    period.

This happens under a specific set of circumstances:
    - The upgraded server was initially created by a TSM level
    earlier than 5.3.6 or 5.4.2,
    - The server is used for Archive in addition to Backup, and
    - The REPAIR EXPIRATION utility was never run to correct the
    problems identified by APAR IC53075.

    TSM Versions Affected:
TSM client V6.1 on all Linux Platform.

    Initial impact: Medium

    Additional Keywords:
    backupset retention unlimited zz61

Local fix

  • - On servers that have already been upgraded to V6 and exhibit
this problem, a DB2 SQL statement
can be executed to fix the database entries in error:

         update tsmdb1.archive_objects set retinit_date=insdate
where retinit_date is null and objtype in (6, 22)

Note that the TSM database must be backed up before attempting
this repair action, and the TSM
server must be halted while it is being performed.

    - For servers that have not yet been upgraded, but that might
    exhibit this problem upon being
    upgraded:
-- Specify the EVENTBASEDUSED=NEVER parameter on the DSMUPGRD
    EXTRACTDB command. However, do
not do this if there is any chance that event based archive
retention has ever been used on the
    server. Instead,
-- Run the command "REPAIR EXPIRATION * TYPE=ARCHIVE
    EVENTBASEUSED=FIX FIX=YES" prior to
upgrading. Note that this command inspects every archive object
stored on the server, and so can
take a long time to complete, depending on the number of archive
    objects stored.

Problem conclusion

  • The V6 database upgrade was modified to correctly process backup

    set retention initiation dates.

    In addition, a new command

      REPAIR BACKUPSETS

was added to repair the retention initiation date for any backup

set whose retention initiation date was set to NULL by database
    upgrade.

REPAIR BACKUPSETS (Repair retention initiation dates for
    backup sets)

Use this command to reset the retention initiation date for
backup sets whose retention initiation date was set to NULL by
the V6 database upgrade (the DSMSERV INSERTDB command).

    Privilege class

To issue this command, you must have system privilege.

    Syntax

    >>-REPAIR BACKUPSETs---------------------------------------><

    Parameters

    None

Affected platforms: AIX, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Linux, and
    Windows.
