Error description

  • If a .NET application is talking to a server which does not
support SPI query calls, the application fails with a 2298
(FUNCTION_NOT_SUPPORTED) when it attempts to query the SPI
levels. This results in the MQCONNX call failing.
The following exception is seen in a WebSphere MQ trace:
    -----}! SPINewHObj (rc=MQRC_FUNCTION_NOT_SUPPORTED)
    ----} UnmanagedNmqiMQ.SPIQuerySPI(Hconn,int,ref int,
    ref int,ref int,ref int,out int,out int) (rc=OK)
    ---} UnmanagedNmqiMQ.MQCONNX(String,ref MQCNO,Hconn,
    Phconn,out int,out int) (rc=OK)
    --} UnmanagedNmqiMQ.MQCONNX(String,MQConnectOptions,
    Phconn,out int,out int) (rc=OK)
    MQException CompCode: 2 Reason: 2298

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    USERS AFFECTED:
All users of .NET talking to WebSphere MQ systems which do not
support the SPI verbs, such as WebSphere MQ for VSE.

    Platforms affected:
    Windows

    ****************************************************************
    PROBLEM SUMMARY:
The .NET unmanaged layer assumed that it could query the
supported SPI interfaces, and failed to take into account there
are systems, such as on VSE, which do not even implement the
query function. When used against such a system, an unexpected
MQRC_FUNCTION_NOT_SUPPORTED was being returned but not handled.

Problem conclusion

  • The .NET unmanaged interface has been modified to correctly
handle a MQRC_FUNCTION_NOT_SUPPORTED when querying the
supported SPI versions, and handle that return code correctly
as though no SPI verbs are supported.
