Error description

• The TSM server may be able to mount and write valid data to a
scratch tape but then receive an ANR8355E error when dismounting
the tape. The TSM server activity log would show :

<timestamp> ANR8337I 3592 volume ABC123 mounted in drive DRIVE1
(device). (SESSION: 456, PROCESS: 789)
<timestamp> ANR1340I Scratch volume ABC123 is now defined in
storage pool POOL_ABC. (SESSION: 456, PROCESS: 789)
<timestamp> ANR0513I Process 789 opened output volume ABC123.
(SESSION: 456, PROCESS: 789)
<timestamp> ANR0514I Session 456 closed volume ABC123.
(SESSION: 456)
<timestamp> ANR8336I Verifying label of 3592 volume ABC123 in
drive DRIVE1 (device). (SESSION: 456, PROCESS: 789)
<timestamp> ANR8355E I/O error reading label for volume ABC123
in drive DRIVE1 (device). (SESSION: 456, PROCESS: 789)

Following the dismount, the same tape volume will suffer from
the ANR8355E error on mount, rendering all previously written
data unavailable.

Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
The TSM server re-writes the HDR1 block when it writes the
beginning of tape (BOT). The server fails to properly convert
(ECDIC to ASCII) the HDR1 label block if the existing HDR1
block contains a character with hex value greater than 0x'7F'.
Later, on dismount, because the HDR1 block is incorrectly
formatted, the ANR8355E error is received.

A TSM server PVR trace will show that the HDR1 label block is
corrupted. For example :

<timestamp> [nnn][pvrntp.c][7129][ReadLabelBlocks]:Reading label
blocks from NTP drive DRIVE1 (device)
<timestamp> [nnn][pvrntp.c][7161][ReadLabelBlocks]:Read VOL1
block from drive DRIVE1 (device); sig=VOL1, volSer=ABC123.
<timestamp> [nnn][pspvr.c][3003][PvrDevRead]:PvrDevRead:
handle = 119, read amt = 80, numBytes requested = 80, errno = 0
<timestamp> [nnn][pvrntp.c][7205][ReadLabelBlocks]:Read HDR1
block from drive DRIVE1 (device); sig=ﾮﾉﾦﾌ.
<timestamp> [nnn][pvrntp.c][7211][ReadLabelBlocks]:
Signature did not match.
<timestamp> [nnn][output.c][6377][PutConsoleMsg]:
ANR8355E I/O error reading label for volume ABC123 in drive
DRIVE1 (device).~

From this point on, because the HDR1 block is invalid, the same
tape will fail to mount with the same ANR8355E error.

TSM Versions Affected:
TSM 5.4.3.x, 5.5.1.x and 6.1.0.x on UNIX,Linux and Windows.

Additional Keywords:
header1 labelled autolabel 36870

Local fix

• Use the LABEL LIBVOLUME when labelling scratch tapes. This will
initialize all label blocks and prevent the ANR8355E error for
occurring in the first place.
