Error description
DB2 problems seen with TPC when /3GB switch used.
Local fix
Suggested to turn off /3GB switch, as this limits the kernel memory/address space to 1GB.
Problem summary
Users Affected: Those using /3GB flag Problem Description: TotalStorage Productivity Center 3.x running with DB2 version 9.1 on a Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition machine with 8GB RAM is losing the connection to the repository database erratically when selecting a GUI option that needs database access (e.g. an asset report). TotalStorage Productivity Center GUI shows an error message "GEN0050E Unable to connect to repository database." when selecting an GUI option that needs database access. In the db2diag.log several occurrences of error message "1450 Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." can be found. The problem occurs several times a day and can only be solved by rebooting the TotalStorage Productivity Center server.
Problem conclusion
Added the following technote: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?&uid=swg21321994 Problem(Abstract) TotalStorage Productivity Center 3.x running with DB2 version 9.1 on a Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition machine with 8GB RAM is losing the connection to the repository database erratically when selecting a GUI option that needs database access (e.g. an asset report). Symptom TotalStorage Productivity Center GUI shows an error message "GEN0050E Unable to connect to repository database." when selecting an GUI option that needs database access. In the db2diag.log several occurrences of error message "1450 Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." can be found. The problem occurs several times a day and can only be solved by rebooting the TotalStorage Productivity Center server. Resolving the problem The problem is caused by a switch in the Windows Startup configuration file boot.ini. In this file the user can configure the OS memory management and other options. When the system has 8 GB RAM following switches can be set in the boot.ini to optimize the memory usage above 4 GB of physical memory: - /PAE which enables Physical Address Extension that allows more than 4 GB of physical memory to be used in 32-bit systems - /3GB which changes the default memory allocation settings for the user-mode virtual address space and the kernel-mode components. Per default the allocation is 2 GB respectively. This flag changes that to 3 GB user mode address space and restricts the kernel-mode components to the remaining 1 GB. If using TotalStorage Productivity Center 3.x with DB2 version 9.1 and higher the /3GB flag has to be removed because the 1 GB kernel address space is not sufficient with this configuration. The /PAE flag is no problem and can remain in the boot.ini. Here is the procedure to check the boot.ini and eventually remove the /3GB switch: 1. Right Click My Computer and select Properties. The System Properties dialog box will appear. 2. Click Advanced tab. 3. In the Startup and Recovery area, click Settings. The Startup and Recovery dialog box will appear. 4. In the System Startuo area, click Edit. This will open the Windows boot.ini file in Notepad. 5. In the [Operating Systems] section, remove the following switches to the end of the startup line that includes the /fastdetect switch: /3GB 6. Save the changes and close Notepad. 7. Click OK two times to close the open dialog boxes, and then restart the computer for the change to take effect.
