Error description

  • Due to an issue with the TSM device driver it is possible that
the serial number of the tape drive is not updated in the TSM
drive definition when the define path command for the tape drive
is run. As a result, the serial number entry is left blank in
the drive definition. Subsequent usage of the drive will fail,
and the tape path will be set offline. Another situation has
been seen where the define path command for the tape drive
simply fails. The two reported situations were seen at TSM
server level 5.2.1.0 on Windows 2003 and TSM server level
    5.2.3.0 on AIX 5.2, respectively.
    .
In a TSM trace, the following was seen at 5.2.1.0:
    .
    [21][pvrgts.c][4848]: (PvrGtsGetTapeId) Xinquiry success for
drive MT4.0.0.4 opened with existing path MT4.0.0.4 the serial
number is PXB07P1693 vendor name is wwn is

[21][pvrgts.c][4878]: (PvrGtsGetTapeId) No match found in the
library LB0.0.0.4 config for drive MT4.0.0.4 serial [PXB07P1693]

[21][mmsdrive.c][8807]: (InsertDriveRow) Update Serial number in
    DB with [].
    .
Based on the trace above, it appears that the TSM Device driver
truncates the serial number, and as a result a match is not made
and thus the serial number is not updated in the drive
definition. When the drive is used, the path will be taken
offline due to a serial number mismatch error as shown by the
    following trace statements:
    .
    [34][pvrgts.c][4455]: (PvrGtsCheckTapeId) Serial number
mmismatch! Serial in descritpor is blank and serial for inquiry
    is [PXB07P1693] for drive MT4.0.0.4
    [34][napath.c][2269]: Mark path offline for
    sourceName=CORT02NS-TSM, destination=MT4.0.0.4, source type=2,
    destination type=1
    .
At the 5.2.3.0 TSM server level the following error mesage was
    seen in the actlog:
    .
ANR2017I Administrator XXXXX issued command: DEFINE
             PATH tib_tsm dlt03 srct=server destt=drive libr=tl891b
             device=/dev/mt3 (SESSION: 3)
ANR8972E DEFINE PATH: Unable to find the element number
for drive DLT03 in library TL891B. (SESSION: 3)
ANR2017I Administrator XXXXX issued command: ROLLBACK
             (SESSION: 3)
    .
Both situations are attributed to the same problem with the TSM
    device driver.
    INITIAL IMPACT: Medium

Local fix

  • A work around is possible for the situation where the tape drive
path is defined. However, if the tape drive path fails to
define, the situation cannot be worked around. For the
situation where the path is defined, manually updating the
serial number in the drive definition will allow one to use the
    tape drive.

The TSM device driver needs to return the entire drive serial
    number from the library.

Problem conclusion

  • The TSM device driver returns incomplete drive serial number
from the library. The server compares this information with
the drive serial number from the drive. When these numbers
do not match, the DEFINE PATH command to define a path to the
    drive will fail.

This fix will allow the device driver to return the entire
drive serial number from the library. Once this information
matches the drive serial number from the drive, the DEFINE
PATH command to define a path to the drive will succeed.
