Error description

  • SCENARIO:
    1. Start CATIA V5
    2. Create a new CATPart
    CASE 1:
    3. Go into sketcher workbench and create a profile with
    following co-ordinates on XY plane.
    4. Select Profile icon and create a sketch using points at
    following co-ordinates
    Point 1 at (0, 0)
    Point 2 at (40, 0)
    Point 3 at (40, 40)
    Point 4 at (0, 40)
    Point 5 at (0, -10)
    5. Click Exit workbench
    6. Select Pad command
    7. Select the sketch (created at step 3 to 5)
    8. Click Ok
    Observation:
    Feature Definition Error
You must use thick option in order to use an open profile,
whenever current feature is the first solid feature of a
body. Do you want to use the selected sketch anyway?
    9. Click Yes on error and click OK in Pad dialog box
    Observation:
    Update Error
    Part1\PartBody\Pad.1
You must use thick option in order to use an open profile,
whenever current feature is the first solid feature of a body
    This is correct behavior.
    .
    CASE 2
    9. Double click on sketch.1 to go into the sketch
    10. Create a line starting from (0, 0) to (0, -10) so that it
will overlap the earlier line and select exit workbench.
    11. Select Pad command
    12. Select the sketch
    13. Click Ok
    Observation:
No error appears and Pad is created.-This is a problem.
    .
    PROBLEM:
Inconsistent behavior of Pad command when profile is
    self-intersecting.
    EXPECTED RESULT:
Behavior of Pad should be consistent and error should appear
    in both the cases.

Problem conclusion

  • THIS PROBLEM IS PERMANENT RESTRICTION IN CATIA
    Additional Closure Information:
    .
    INCIDENT DIAGNOSIS:
Inconsistent behavior of Pad command when profile is
    self-intersecting.
    .
    RESTRICTION EXPLANATION:
When user creates additional overlapping line, the earlier
open profile(sketch) gets closed. Then this closed sketch is
taken as input for the Pad. Pad algorithm uses the clever
computation by healing the edge (overlapping line) which is
self crossed. Thus the Pad is created using the healed face
which is correct behavior. It is not appropriate to restrict
Pad creation and throwing an error message as profile itself
is closed. Furthermore it will introduce the regression in
the other parts which are created using the healed sketches.
    .
    By-Pass:
    None
