Error description
V5R16 FTA documentation (Creating Datums) says : "When you select a non-canonical geometry a datum support, the created datum will be invalid because there is no enough information to define datum plane orientation. Two possibilities to avoid this problem: - Edit the invalid datum and define the plane orientation in the Plane Direction field. - Create the datum using the Tolerancing Advisor which recognizes automatically the selected geometry as non-canonical and asks you to define the plane orientation in the Plane Direction field". But, the problem is: we cannot select the surface in "Plane direction:" field Expected Result: The surface should be selected in "Plane direction:" field. .

Problem summary
Cannot select the surface in "Plane direction:" field V5R16 FTA documentation (Creating Datums) says : "When you select a non-canonical geometry a datum support, the created datum will be invalid because there is no enough information to define datum plane orientation. But, the problem is: we cannot select the surface in "Plane direction:" field Expected Result: The surface should be selected in "Plane direction:" field. .
Problem conclusion
THIS PROBLEM WILL BE FIXED ON CATIA VERSION 5 RELEASE 17 GA level. Incident Diagnosis When a plane has been selected to define the plane direction for the geometry pointed by the datum, the plane represents the geometry. So, after the creation of the 1st datum, the "Surface.175" represents "Edge/Surface.175/1". When user wants to create another datum with the same edge, "Surface.175" can't be selected as Plane direction because it represents already a geometry. Correction Explanation It is now possible for a plane to be selected as "Plane direction" even if it represents already a geometry. In this case, it represents the geometry pointed by the datum that is being defined. The link between it and the geometry it represented is removed. Answer and By-Pass This problem has been corrected on V5R17ga. .
