  • DESCRIPTION:
    WHEN IMPORTING A IGES FILE CONTAINING BSPLINE CURVES IN HIGH
    QUANTITY, THE PERFORMANCES ARE BAD
    
    STEP BY STEP SCENARIO
    1. File+Open the iges file in V5R8+SP2
    2. It takes a bit of time, even in customer's Xeon box
       (in scale of minutes, not seconds ... )
    3. The resulting CATPart file size occupies 47M, when
    comparing with only 4M of the original iges file.
    4. The log file shows the followings

    5. According to the 'explanation' of 36009/B432/C758, the
    iges file composes of many curve entities, and so after
    importing into V5, it occupies some space to describe it.
    6. As a control test, we import the same iges file into V4
    (V424R1).
    7. The resulting .model the size of which is LESS THAN 4M
    ...

    9. If V5 is said to be more superior than V4, why the former
    is just beaten by the latter in this SIMPLE test??
    10.MORE IMPORTANTLY, customer is not comparing the
    performance between V4 and V5. HE IS COMPARING CATIA with
    competitors (such as P/E, UG). With our 'fastest' Xeon box,
    CATIA V5 is just falling behind by the competitors on
       - V5 being 10 times running slower
       - V5 being 10 times MORE the file size it's generating in
    the resulting file
    

Local fix

Problem summary

  •  INCIDENT DIAGNOSIS:
    WHEN IMPORTING AN IGES FILE CONTAINING BSPLINES IN HIGH QUANTITY
    THE PERFORMANCES ARE BAD.
    

Problem conclusion

  • THIS PROBLEM WILL BE FIXED ON
      CATIA VERSION 5 RELEASE 10 GA level.
    
     TECHNICAL EXPLANATION FOR THE CORRECTION:
    The performance problem is now solved, the file is opened in
    less than 45 seconds (compared to 6 minutes before).
    About the size problem, please use the Topological Reduction
    option that reduces the size of the CATPart at the end.
    Please note that using this option, the time spent on the
    transfert is quite bigger.
    
     ANSWER AND POSSIBLE BY-PASS:
    No BYPASS.
