ANS1092W for retrieve, restore, or query of API data

Troubleshooting

Problem

The warning ANS1092W is returned on Windows clients when attempting to query or restore/retrieve data that was stored using the Tivoli Storage Manager API.

Symptom

A query does not find the object, even though it exists:
C:\Program Files\tivoli\tsm\baclient>dsmc query archive {"FileSpace"}\My Folder\STORED\Jan_Apr\

Node Name: MY_API_NODE
Session established with server <ServerName>: Windows
Server Version X, Release X, Level X

ANS1092W No files matching search criteria were found

Cause

The data has been stored on the Tivoli Storage Manage server using a mixture of upper and lower case characters in the HL/LL name. The Tivoli Storage Manager Windows client is case insensitive and case preserving. The API itself does not perform any case modifications, and as such the data must be stored on the server in upper case.

Diagnosing The Problem

A select against the objects will show the data has been stored with the mixture of case:

A Tivoli Storage Manager client query using the filespace name will also show this mixture:

Resolving The Problem

When the case is mixed as noted above, the dsmc will be able to query/restore or retrieve only at the filespace level. Even though Windows is case insensitive, it will not be possible to do a query/restore or retrieve at the object level, since the Tivoli Storage Manager client is expecting the object to be in upper case. For full interoperability the object needs to be stored in upper case as noted in the documentation.
