altering column length of a table returns error SQL0270N reason code 70

Troubleshooting


Problem

When attempting to alter the column length of a table, error SQL0270N reason code 70 is returned.

Symptom

The following is an example of the statement issued and the error returned:
$ db2 alter table store alter column store_number set data type char"(10)"
DB21034E  The command was processed as an SQL statement because it was not a
valid Command Line Processor command.  During SQL processing it returned:
SQL0270N  Function not supported (Reason code = "70").  SQLSTATE=42997
