ALSCAL warns number of data values is low

Troubleshooting

Problem

I have just run a multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis with the SPSS ALSCAL procedure. I first requested a 5-dimensional solution for 10 objects (variables) and received the following warning: "Warning # 14655 The total number of parameters being estimated (number of stimulus coordinates plus number of weights, if any) exceeds the number of data values. Either decrease the number of parameters to estimate (e.g. request fewer dimensions) or increase the number of observed values. This ALSCAL solution is being skipped. Number of parameters is 50. Number of data values is 45" As stated in the warning, the analysis was not performed. I reduced the number of dimensions to 2 and tried again. This time and the analysis did run, but a slightly different warning was printed at the top of the analysis: "Warning # 14654 The total number of parameters being estimated (the number of stimulus coordinates plus the number of weights, if any) is large relative to the number of data values in your data matrix. The results may not be reliable since there may not be enough data to precisely estimate the values of the parameters. You should reduce the number of parameters (e.g. request fewer dimensions) or increase the number of observations. Number of parameters is 20. Number of data values is 45". I don't understand these warnings. I had hundreds of cases in my raw data file, with no missing values. Why do the warnings state that I only have 45 cases?
