This tip provides additional information for users trying to setup Advanced Encrypting Standard (AES) 256-bit encryption.

Not applicable.

Additional information

AES, which runs in the SSD logic data, is written to the solid state drive using an internal encryption key. When the solid state drive is Secure Erased, the key is destroyed and replaced with a new one. The data remains but is indiscernible.

If someone steals the disk and plugs it into another controller, unlike encrypted SED or FDE drives, the SSD will be read accessible. AES only helps if one Secure Erase the drive.

Alternatively, users can set passwords in the Server BIOS on hard drives attached. The Secure Erase will clear the passwords, but that will also wipe the key.
