Troubleshooting
Problem
When using any version of the MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM) application, under the Battery Backup Unit (BBU) option, the "Delay Next Learn Cycle" function shows a delay for thirty (30) days into the future and does not take into account additional delays added by the end user.

RETAIN tip: H196026
Symptom
When using any version of the MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM) application, under the Battery Backup Unit (BBU) option, the "Delay Next Learn Cycle" function shows a delay interval of thirty (30) days into the future or "none" and does not take into account additional delays added by the end user.
Affected configurations
The system is configured with at least one of the following:
- LSI Logic MegaRAID Storage Manager, any version
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- IBM MegaRAID 8480 SAS PCI-Express RAID adapter, Option part number 39R8850, replacement part number (CRU) 39R8852 - Adapter
- ServeRAID M1015 SAS/SATA Controller, Option part number 46M0831, replacement part number (CRU) 46M0861
- ServeRAID M5014 SAS/SATA Controller, Option part number 46M0916, replacement part number (CRU) 46M0918
- ServeRAID M5015 SAS/SATA Controller, Option part number 46M0829, replacement part number (CRU) 46M0851 - Adapter
- ServeRAID M5025 SAS/SATA Controller, Option part number 46M0830, replacement part number (CRU) 46M0854
- ServeRAID-MR10M SAS/SATA Controller, Option part number 43W4339, replacement part number (CRU) 43W4341 - Adapter

- ServeRAID-MR10k SAS/SATA Controller, Option part number 43W4280, replacement part number (CRU) 43W4282 - Adapter
This tip is not system specific.
Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Solution
None, this is a permanent restriction, there will be no solution.
Workaround
-
Using the MegaRAID Command Line Interface (MegaCLI) utility for Linux, open a Linux Terminal session and type the following command to display the current BBU Properties:
MegaCLI -AdpBbuCmd -GetBbuProperties -aALL
-
Identify the Next Learn time seconds as shown in the example below:
BBU Properties for Adapter: 0
Auto Learn Period: 2592000 Sec
Next Learn time: 332616616 Sec
-
Type the following command and press Enter:
date -d "UTC 2000-01-01 332616616 secs Note: The output example given from the above command is "Fri Jul 16 13:30:16 EDT 2010," which indicates the actual date and time of the next Battery Relearn cycle. For additional information, see the ServeRAID MR Software User's Guide.
Additional information
The MegaRAID controller firmware automatically initiates the battery Learn Cycle as needed, but in MSM, the end users can delay the start time of the Learn Cycle (in units of hours) by manipulating the "Delay Next Learn Cycle" field.
When the "Automatic Learn Cycles" function is set to "Disable" mode, the controller firmware will "Reset" BBU properties which will initiate an immediate battery learn cycle. The "Next Learn Cycle" field will not be updated until the battery relearn is completed.
The MegaCLI utility can be used to verify that the learn cycle delay has been properly set.
