Resolving The Problem
This document provides information about adding a virtual Ethernet adapter (F/C268C) to an IBM i5/OS partition using the HMC.
Adding a Virtual Ethernet Adapter (F/C268C)
Note: The user building this configuration must have HSCROOT authority; otherwise, some functions will be grayed out.
The following are the ways to add virtual Ethernet to a partition:
1) Permanently add virtual Ethernet to a partition. By adding it to the profile, the change will not take effect immediately. The partition must
be powered off without a restart by using the PWRDWNSYS RESTART(*NO) command, and it must be activated from the HMC.
2) Dynamically add virtual Ethernet to a partition. Dynamic Logical Partitioning (DLPAR) allows adding and removing virtual Ethernet
without an IPL of the partition. However, the changes will not be kept after an IPL. It is best to add the virtual Ethernet in the partition
profile so the configuration can be saved.
(1) Permanently Adding Virtual Ethernet to the Partition Profile
To add virtual Ethernet to the partition profile, do the following:
Step 1: From the HMC, select the partition to work with.

Step 2: The bottom frame has Tasks along with the partition name that was selected. Open Configuration and select Manage
Profiles.

Step 3: A Managed Profiles screen pops up. Select the profile you want and click on Actions > Edit.

Step 4: After Edit is selected, a Profile Properties screen is presented. Go to the Virtual Adapters tab.

Step 5: Click on Actions > Create. Select Ethernet Adapter.

Step 6: A Create Virtual Ethernet Adapter screen is presented. You can leave the fields at the default and click OK. A virtual Ethernet is
created now.
1. Ensure OK is selected on any other windows that were opened during this exercise.
2. The Optional Settings fields are not support by i5/OS.

Step 7: After an IPL, resource type F/C268C should be detected under Work with Hardware Resources by using the following command:
WRKHDWRSC TYPE(*CMN)
CMB02 268C Operational
LIN01 6B03 Operational
CMN01 6B03 Operational
LIN02 6B03 Operational
CMN02 6B03 Operational
LIN08 268C Operational
CMN10 268C Operational
CTL03 290B Operational
LIN03 268C Operational
CMN03 268C Operational
Step 8: Under Work with Hardware Resources (WRKHDWRSC), Option 7 shows the details of the virtual Ethernet. The Adapter
field matches the Adapter ID when the virtual Ethernet line was created:
Resource name . . . . . . . : CMN15
Text . . . . . . . . . . . . : Ethernet Port
Type-model . . . . . . . . . : 268C-001
Serial number . . . . . . . : 00-00000
Part number . . . . . . . . :
Location: U9406.520.10EAD4C-V1-C5-T1
Communications:
I/O bus 208
Adapter 5
Port 0
(2) Dynamically Adding Virtual Ethernet to a Partition
To dynamically add virtual Ethernet to a partition, do the following:
Step 1: From the HMC, select the partition to work with.

Step 2: The bottom frame has Tasks along with the partition name that was selected. Open Dynamic Logical Partitioning and
select Virtual Adapters.

Step 3: A Virtual Adapters screen pops up. Click on Actions > Create. Select the Ethernet Adapter option.

Step 4: A Create Virtual Ethernet Adapter screen is presented. You can leave the fields at the default and click OK. A virtual Ethernet is
created now.
Notes:
1. Ensure OK is selected on any other windows that were opened during this exercise.
2. The Optional Settings fields are not support by i5/OS

Step 5: Resource type F/C268C should be detected under WRKHDWRSC TYPE(*CMN); for example:
CMB02 268C Operational
LIN01 6B03 Operational
CMN01 6B03 Operational
LIN02 6B03 Operational
CMN02 6B03 Operational
LIN08 268C Operational
CMN10 268C Operational
CTL03 290B Operational
LIN03 268C Operational
CMN03 268C Operational
Step 6: Under Work with Hardware Resources (WRKHDWRSC), Option 7 shows the details of the virtual Ethernet. The Adapter field
matches the Adapter ID when the virtual Ethernet line was created:
Resource name . . . . . . . : CMN15
Text . . . . . . . . . . . . : Ethernet Port
Type-model . . . . . . . . . : 268C-001
Serial number . . . . . . . : 00-00000
Part number . . . . . . . . :
Location: U9406.520.10EAD4C-V1-C5-T1
Communications:
I/O bus 208
Adapter 5
Port 0
After the CMN resource is created, you can create the line description with the following command:
CRTLINETH LIND(ETHLINE) RSRCNAME(CMNXX) LINESPEED(*AUTO) DUPLEX(*AUTO)
Step 7: (optional) Save the dynamic change to the profile.
If the partition Properties "Sync current configuration Capability" setting is set to "Sync turned ON", the dynamic change will be automatically saved to the current profile.

If the setting is "Sync turned OFF", then the change can be manually saved to the profile using the partition task Configuration > Save Current Configuration Verify the current profile is selected and click OK
