Adding cases while dataset saves causes greyed out cases and additional values

Problem

I am using PASW/SPSS Statistics and have attempted save a very large file. The file includes about 23000 cases and about 300 variables and when I select SAVE the save proceedure does begin to run and displays "Running Save...Cases: NNNN.." I then begin entering data on the next blank case in my dataset, and the data displays oddly across the next N number of cases. For example, if I start on line 21916 and try to enter responses across the case, I see the entered values sprinkled through out the next few cases while case number 21917 is greyed out. Cases 21917 through 21921 should NOT contain data, but then end up with values if I enter for case 21916. When I wait for the Save command to run completely, I have no problem entering the data.
