Each calendar rule applies to a single locationor dock. Sterling TMS uses these calendars to manage dock appointmentsand process shipments during optimization runs.
You can definemultiple calendar rules to create different versions of the calendar. When multiple calendar rules exist for the same dock or location Sterling TMS uses the effectiveand expiration dates along with precedence rules to determine whichrule is in effect.

Calendar Rule Precedence
You can definemultiple calendar rules and use the effective and expiration datesto create different versions of your calendar. These calendar rulesallow you to adjust the schedule to manage the day-to-day activitiesat this dock or location.
If you set up multiple calendar rulesfor the same dock or location Sterling TMS uses the effectiveand expiration dates to determine which rule is in effect.
Ifthe effective and expiration dates of the rules overlap Sterling TMS uses the followingprocess:
- A rule with the Dock Type set to Closed hasthe highest precedence.
- A rule that specifies a standing appointment has the next highestprecedence.
- For rules that have a Dock Type of Shipping Receivingor Both Sterling TMS processesthe rules in the order they were created.
To avoid confusion make sure that any overlapping calendarrules consist only of an open rule and a closed rule. If open rulesoverlap Sterling TMS doesnot use the effective and expiration dates to determine precedence.
Forexample:
- You define a general calendar rule for a dock:
- The effective date is 1 January 2012 and the expiration date is31 December 2012.
- The dock is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- You have to close the dock for maintenance. You define the followingcalendar rule:
- The effective date is 13 August 2012 and the expiration date is15 August 2012.
- The Dock Type field is set to Closed.
- Sterling TMS usesthe calendar rules to define the dock schedule:
- The dock is open from 1 January 2012 to 12 August 2012.
- The dock is closed from 13 August 2012 to 15 August 2012.
- The dock is open from 16 August 2012 to 31 December 2012.
