Troubleshooting
Problem
Unspecified Host Internet Protocol (IP) is allowed to access Integrated Management Module II (IMM2) Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) on IBM System x M4 systems. The issue can be observed by performing the following procedure: Log into IMM2 Webinterface. Choose IMM Management -> Network. Navigate to the SNMP section. Check the Enable SNMPv1 Agent box. Navigate to the Contact tab Set the value of Contact person and Location data. Navigate to the Communities tab. Set the value of the Community name. Select Allow any host to query MIB objects. Check Allow IPv4 Hosts below. Change selection to Allow only specific hosts to query MIB. Set the host IP address below the selection as the specific hosts. The unspecific host IP addresses out of the setting of Step 11 are still able to access IMM2 SNMP.

Symptom
Unspecified Host Internet Protocol (IP) is allowed to access Integrated Management Module II (IMM2) Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) on IBM System x M4 systems.
The issue can be observed by performing the following procedure:
- Log into IMM2 Web interface.
- Choose IMM Management -> Network.
- Navigate to the SNMP section.
- Check the Enable SNMPv1 Agent box.
- Navigate to the Contact tab
- Set the value of Contact person and Location data.
- Navigate to the Communities tab.
- Set the value of the Community name.
- Select Allow any host to query MIB objects.
- Check Allow IPv4 Hosts below.
- Change selection to Allow only specific hosts to query MIB.
- Set the host IP address below the selection as the specific hosts.
The unspecific host IP addresses out of the setting of Step 11 are still able to access IMM2 SNMP.
Affected configurations
The system can be any of the following IBM servers:
- System x3500 M4, type 7383, any model
- System x3530 M4, type 7160, any model
- System x3550 M4, type 7914, any model
- System x3630 M4, type 7158, any model
- System x3650 M4 BD, type 5466, any model
- System x3650 M4, type 7915, any model
This tip is not software specific.
This tip is not option specific.
The following system firmware level are affected:
- Build ID: 1aoo50d
- Build ID: 1aoo50i
The system has the symptom described above.
Solution
This behavior will be corrected in a future release of IMM.
The target date for this release is second quarter 2014.
The file is or will be available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:
Workaround
To work around the issue, the Accept IPv4 and Accept IPv6 options needs to be unchecked (cleared). Complete the following steps:
- Login the Integrated Management Module II (IMM2) Web interface
- Navigate IMM Management -> Network.
- Choose 'SNMP' (Simple Network Management Protocol)
- Under this page, check Enable SNMPv1 Agent.
-
On the Communities configuration page, uncheck (clear) Accept IPv4 Hosts and Accept IPv6 Hosts.
This will restrict unspecified host IP addresses to access SNMP.
(where IPv4 = Internet Protocol version 4, where IPv6 = Internet Protocol version 6)Additional information
This symptom can occur when users want to restrict unspecified host Internet Protocol (IP) to access Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
A workaround is available through Web interface. Users can follow the Workaround steps to allow this restriction to function properly.
