About xWindows connection to ":0.0" refused by server error

Problem

This technote explains why IBM® Rational® ClearCase® GUIs, such as xclearcase, when displayed by xWindows fails to start on Linux™ environments with the following error: []Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server[].

Symptom


xWindows is a windowing system for bitmap displays that provides a graphical user interface (GUI) which runs on top of Linux (or UNIX®).

When trying to run a ClearCase GUI, such as xclearcase, via xWindows it fails to start on Linux with the following error:


    Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
    Xlib: No protocol specified
    Error: Can't open display: :0.0
