Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is a group of communications protocols used to send and receive data over the Internet. Most networks support TCP/IP.

Many Internet users are familiar with the protocols that use TCP/IP to get to the Internet: Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).

TCP/IP is a two-layer program. The higher layer Transmission Control Protocol disassembles data into smaller packets that are transmitted over the Internet and received by a TCP layer that reassembles the packets into the original data. The lower layer Internet Protocol handles the address part of each packet so it gets to the right destination.
