Relative to the TCP/IP suite of protocols which are the basis for information exchange on the Internet Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is an application protocol.

HTTP over Secure Socket Layer (HTTPS) or HTTP over SSL is a Web protocol that uses SSL as a sublayer for HTTP for added security. A server-level certificate is required for inbound and outbound messages. If security is a concern HTTPS should be used. (Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is a protocol for transmitting private documents through the Internet.)

Sterling B2B CollaborationNetwork uses an HTTP Communications Gateway that enables users to send documents using HTTP. The HTTP Communications Gateway supports the following message types:

  • Non-MIME messages such as raw EDI data or certain proprietary standards documents
  • AS2 messages
  • Flat file data
