Answer

About Accessorials

An accessorial is a charge for services performed above and beyondhauling the load.

Accessorial Precedence

Shippers can applyan accessorial to any of the contract levels:

  • The contract-level accessorial applies to all sections and laneswithin the contract such as fuel surcharges. The sections and lanesinherit the contract-level accessorials.
  • The section-level accessorial applies only to the lanes withinthat section such as cleaning charges for a specific equipment type.
  • A lane accessorial is only applicable to that lane such as atoll charge for the lane.

If an accessorial is assigned to more than one level of thecontract then the most discrete level is used to calculate the accessorialcost. For example if an equipment accessorial is applied at the contractlevel and the rating lane level only the accessorial for the ratinglane is charged for the shipment.

Shippers can also apply anaccessorial to an area. Sterling TMS only appliesthe accessorial charge to shipments that are picked up or deliveredin the area.
