Troubleshooting

Problem

Serial Over LAN (SOL) unreliable at 9600 baud rate and above - IBM eServer 325, 326

Resolving The Problem

Source

Retain tip: H183684

Symptom

Dropped connections and poor performance may occur when configuring Serial over LAN at baud rates of 9600 or higher.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServers:

  • an eServer 326, type 8848, any model
  • an eServer 325, type 8835, any model

The BIOS levels affected are:

all

Solution

None

Workaround

Configure system to use no higher than 4800 bauds for the console serial speed when using Serial over LAN. This is a current limitation of the system. The internal bus between the Broadcom ethernet controller and the BMC is unable to accommodate connections over 9600 bauds.
