Power fault not detected in Management Module error log - IBM BladeCenter T

Troubleshooting

Problem

3.3V and 5V power failures on the Management Module do not create a specific power failure error entry in Management Module log.

Resolving The Problem

Source

RETAIN tip: H183351

Symptom

3.3V and 5V power failures on the Management Module do not create a specific power failure error entry in Management Module log.

Instead, the customer will see non-related events, for example: Failure reading I2C device and multiple blower failures.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM BladeCenter:

  • BladeCenter T, type 8730, any model
  • BladeCenter T, type 8720, any model

Management Module Option part number 48P7055, Replacement part number (FRU) 73P9326

Additional information

If the power supplies (3.3 or 5V) on the Management Module experience problems, the events and log entries generated by the Management Module do not explicitly call out the 3.3V or 5V line as suspect.

If there is a problem which causes the 3.3V or 5V powergood indicator to trip, the Management Module behaves in such a way as to maintain the functionality of the system and preserve the equipment.

This protection involves shutting down the subsystems hooked into the respective power lines.

As a result of this architecture, the Management Module will experience failures on various subsystems which are logged for the user (blowers, I2C communication, etc.).

However, there is not a specific event for the 5V and 3.3V line.
