With firmware version 4.2.1, Brocade switches continually reset after external ports are enabled via the Brocade management interface.

Symptom

With firmware version 4.2.1, Brocade switches continually reset after external ports are enabled via the Brocade management interface.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM BladeCenters:  

  • an IBM BladeCenter, Type 8677, any model
  • an IBM BladeCenter HS40, Type 8839, any model
  • an IBM BladeCenter HS20, Type 8678, any model
  • an IBM BladeCenter HS20, Type 8832, any model
  • an IBM BladeCenter JS20, Type 8842, any model
  • an IBM BladeCenter T, Type 8730, any model
  • an IBM BladeCenter T, Type 8720, any model

The system is configured with any diagnostics.  

The BIOS level(s) affected is/are:  

  • any  

The Firmware level(s) affected is/are:

  • any
     
Solution

Upgrade to firmware version 4.2.1a (or higher), and refer to the release notes accompanying it regarding the proper procedure for enabling the external ports.

Workaround

Do not enable the external switch ports by using the Brocade management interface. This should only be done through the an IBM eServer BladeCenter Management Module interface.

Additional information

The external ports of the Brocade Entry/Enterprise switches should be enabled by using the Management Module interface. Enabling the Enty/Enterprise through the Brocade management interface with version 4.2.1 firmware this will result in periodical resets.
