SAN devices connected through Optical Pass-through Module (OPM) not seen in hardware - IBM BladeCenter JS20

Troubleshooting

Problem

The SAN devices in a FAStT storage device (1742-900) that is connected to a JS20 through the internal Optical Passthrough Module (OPM) are not visible in the hardware configuration when Red Hat LINUX Version 3 Update 2 or lower is being used.

Resolving The Problem

Symptom

The SAN devices in a FAStT storage device (1742-900) that is connected to an IBM eServer BladeCenter JS20 through the internal Optical Passthrough Module (OPM) are not visible in the hardware configuration when Red Hat LINUX Version 3 Update 2 or lower is being used.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM BladeCenter systems:

  • an IBM BladeCenter JS20, type 8842, any model

The system is configured with any supported fibre channel storage device.

The following operating systems are affected:

Solution

This behavior is corrected in Red Hat Linux Version 3 Update 3 (or later).

Workaround

With Red Hat Linux Version 3 Update 2, a fibre channel switch module must be installed between the FAStT storage and the OPM that is connected to the JS20. There is no workaround for Update 2 without adding a fibre channel switch module.

Additional information

The device driver does not recognize the LUNs defined for the blade. If the fibre channel storage device is connected to the JS20 through a supported fibre channel switch module installed in the BladeCenter, then the switch will recognize and pass the LUN definitions to the JS20.
