Symptoms
---
When configuring the IBM 4-Port 1GB ESM and setting the external ports to manual 1GB/Full Duplex they will not link to an upstream Cisco switch.
Affected configurations
---
The system may be any model of the IBM eServer BladeCenter, type 8677.
Solution
---
The IBM ESM external ports must be set to Auto to link to an upstream Cisco switch.
Additional information
---
In the IEEE standard, 1000Base-T Ethernet master or slave mode has to be negotiated through auto negotiation. This implies that IEEE standard 1000Base-T Ethernet only works in auto negotiation mode; not manual mode ( or force mode ). In the IBM ESM, forced 1000Base-T means pure manual configuration. In Cisco switches, the force 1000base-T setting means limited auto negotiation with 1000Mbps Full duplex advertised. A Cisco switch 1000Base-T force mode port will wait for auto negotiation to be completed to link up. Since the IBM ESM will not do auto negotiation in force mode, the ports will not link with the Cisco switch. To link a 1000Base-T Full Duplex connection to a Cisco switch, the IBM ESM port must be configured to Auto.
