Serial over LAN (SOL) console session drops during typing - IBM eServer BladeCenter JS20

Troubleshooting

Problem

The Serial over LAN (SOL) session drops when the user repeatedly types on the keyboard during an ethernet link status change.

Resolving The Problem

Source

RETAIN tip: H182255

Symptom

The Serial over LAN (SOL) session drops when the user repeatedly types on the keyboard during an ethernet link status change.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer system:
  • IBM eServer BladeCenter JS20, type 8842, any model

Solution

This behavior is corrected in Firmware, version 2.3, for the JS20 integrated 2-port Gigabit Ethernet Controller (and later) in Broadcom NetXtreme firmware, version 1.20.1 (or later).

Workaround

To work around the problem, do not hit keys when the link is changing. After issuing the ifup and ifdown commands, do not type until the link change has completed. If the Serial over LAN session is dropped, the user can retype the console session command and re-start the session. There is no data lost.
