RETAIN tip: H181969
Symptoms
---
- Customers using Serial Over LAN (SOL) and cut/paste could potentially have characters drop if the buffer is overflowed.
- Customer will see an error occur on the command attempted to be issued.
- SOL is not the primary interface into the blade.
- Customer does not experience this in ssh or telnet.
Affected configurations
---
- The system may be any of model of the IBM eServer BladeCenter JS20, type 8842
- The BIOS level(s) affected is/are: bFW0413000 and older
-
The following operating systems are affected:
- SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server
- Turbolinux Enterprise Server powered by UnitedLinux
Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software. Please see the IBM ServerProven compatibility page for more information.
Solution
---
- This behavior will be corrected in a future release of JS20 open firmware (BIOS) level bFW0419000.
- The target date for the release is scheduled for July, 2004.
Workaround
---
Customer must either cut/paste in small blocks or type in the commands.
Additional information
---
Characters are dropped during cut/paste in a Serial Over LAN. The technical reason why this occurs is the JS20 buffer is 16 characters in length which fills in 8msec while Linux polls every 20msec.
