Symptoms
When running Serial Over LAN (SOL), if the session suddenly disconnects, the underlying Command Line Interface (CLI) may come back with miscellaneous characters such as:
E___: C+++? ++ ??+?=??.
T=? 'h?+' + ?+ +?_+ +?? ?+++?.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM eServer servers:
- A BladeCenter HS40, type 8839, any model
- A BladeCenter HS20, type 8678, any model
- A BladeCenter HS20, type 8832, any model
- A BladeCenter JS20, type 8842, any model
The Firmware levels affected are:
- BRET57KUS and above
The following NOSs are affected:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
NOTE: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.
Please see the compatibility page for more information:
http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/
The BRET57K Firmware for the Management Module is affected.
Solution
There is no fix for this. It is common with telnet clients and special attribute characters
Workaround
If SOL data is desired, reestablish the telnet session.
Additional information
There is no fix for this symptom. The telnet client uses VT100 emulation and the remote application sends back characters with special Attributes for displaying the characters as it intended (background color, foreground color, bold, and so on). However, if the remote application does not exit or does not clear up the special attributes on the emulator screen, future characters on the emulator look like garbage. The user must exit the current telnet session and establish a new telnet session.
This symptom is commonly seen in telnet sessions.
