Problem

IBM has identified an issue with the ATA133 RAID and IDE 100 RAID controllers which may in rare cases result in customer data exposure.

Symptom

IBM has identified an issue with the ATA133 RAID and IDE 100 RAID controllers which may in rare cases result in customer data exposure.

Affected configuration

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer xSeries servers:

  • xSeries 335, type 8830, any model
  • xSeries 335, type 8676, any model
  • xSeries 330, type 8654, any model
  • xSeries 305, type 8673, any model
  • xSeries 300, type 8672, any model
  • xSeries 205, type 8480, any model
  • xSeries 200, type 8478, any model

The system may be any of the following IBM IntelliStations:

  • an IntelliStation M Pro, type 6219, any model
  • an IntelliStation R Pro, type 8654, any model
  • an IntelliStation Z Pro, type 6221, any model

The system is configured with the following option(s):

  • IDE 100 RAID Controller option part number 24P2585, replacement part number (FRU) 24P2586
  • ATA133 RAID Controller option part number 71P8592, replacement part number (FRU) 71P8603

The following network operating systems are affected:

  • Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2003, Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2003, Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2003, Web Edition
  • Red Hat, version 7.3

The device driver for the ATA100 and ATA133 RAID controllers is affected.

Solution

Download and apply the current driver for the operating system.
 
The referenced files are available from IBM ATA-133 RAID controller - Driver and documentation CD. The drivers on the CD iso file do not have the fix; only the driver files.

Additional informatio

IBM has identified an issue with the ATA133 RAID controller (option part number 71P8592) which may result in an exposure to customer data in rare cases. This issue has not been seen in any IBM testing, nor have any of our customers reported an issue. However, on faster systems, this risk exists and although very unlikely, we strongly recommend updating the driver on all systems using one of the above IDE RAID adapters.
