Troubleshooting bootup problems with IBM workstations

Resolving The Problem

  1. To troubleshoot bootup issues, first check these top problems. If your issue is listed, select the link from the list, otherwise proceed to step 2.

    No lights / no fans, system is "dead on arrival" (DOA)
    Beep codes - system is unable to complete POST/startup
    No video, but server otherwise seems to be booting
    System reboots randomly, or during heavy I/O
    POST numeric, beep, and no beep error codes (HMM)

  1. Check added hardware options. Added hardware can cause a system to not boot, or stay powered on:

    1. Remove newly added hardware. If new adapters, hard disk drives, processors or memory have been added to the system, remove them and see if the system boots up. Additional hardware may have shaken loose during shipping, which could cause the system not to boot.

    2. Reseat options when you receive a new system. It is suggested to go through and reseat everything before attempting to bring up a new system. This should also be done for any system that has been shipped or moved to another location, or if you have recently installed new options.

    3. Ensure adaquate power exists. Additional hardware, such as hard disk drives, adapters, processors, or memory may require more power than the system's power supply can deliver. Verify the power requirements of all installed options with the system's power supply. A power supply upgrade may be required (if available for your system).
