120 character limitation using SPSS adding value labels via syntax

Troubleshooting

Problem

I am using SPSS for Windows and when I try to add a value label to a variable via syntax, I see this error message: >Warning # 4490 in column xx. >A label appearing on the (ADD) VALUE LABELS command exceeds 120 characters >in length. The label will be truncated to 120 characters. Is there a way around this?

Resolving The Problem

As noted in the SPSS Syntax Reference Guide, the following limitations apply to Value Labels:

The maximum length of a value label is 120 bytes.

There currently is no way to add longer Value Labels within SPSS. This has been filed as a Feature Request with SPSS Development. We apologize for any inconvenience
