Configuring the service tools server for DST

You can configure the service tools server to be available when your system is powered on to dedicated service tools (DST).

If you use only the Operations Console with LAN connectivity to perform DST activities, you do not need to reconfigure the service tools server because it is already available to you when the system is powered on to DST.

Verify that you have satisfied the hardware requirements using one of the following methods:
  1. If your system is not running in a logical partitioning environment, the service interface used for the service tools server is required to be installed in a specific location, based on your model. See Operations Console hardware requirements to verify this location.
  2. If your system is running in a logical partitioning environment and you are using Operations Console (LAN) then the current HMC tagging is correct. If you are using an HMC you will need to use the Alternate method to select the LAN resource.
Note: If you use the same port (for example, gigabit adapter) for the Service Tools Server that is used for TCP/IP, ensure that you end TCP/IP using the End TCP/IP (ENDTCP) command and vary off the TCP/IP line description before configuring the Service Tools Server (STS). Only gigabit adapters can be shared.

Configuring the service tools server using SST:

  1. Access SST
  2. Select option 8 (Work with Service Tools Server Security and Devices).
  3. Select option 3 (Configure service tools server LAN adapter).
Note: If you receive a message that indicates no resource is available or it is the wrong type see the Alternate method to select the LAN resource.
  4. Enter the TCP/IP information. Press F1 (Help) for the type of information required in each field.
  5. Press F7 (Store) to save your changes.
  6. Press F14 (Activate) to activate the adapter.

Configuring the service tools server using DST:

  1. Access DST
  2. Select option 5 (Work with DST environment).
  3. Select option 2 (System devices).
  4. Select option 7 (Configure service tools server LAN adapter).
Note: If you receive a message that indicates no resource is available or it is the wrong type see the Alternate method.
  5. Enter the TCP/IP information. Press F1 (Help) for the type of information required in each field.
  6. Press F7 (Store) to save your changes.
  7. Press F14 (Activate) to activate the adapter.

Alternate method to select the LAN resource:

If you receive a message that indicates no resource is available or it is the wrong type, you have not satisfied the hardware requirements for the service interface. This might indicate that you have an HMC console or the resource is busy with the IBM® i operating system.

Press F13 for Select STS LAN adapter and select a resource. If the list is empty, press F21 to display resources already in use. You can configure a busy resource but it should not be activated using F14 unless you can vary off the line from the IBM i operating system, otherwise an IPL is required.
