Typically, when an error occurs with virtual tape storage, the
operation stops and you receive an inquiry or escape message. The message
indicates that there is something wrong with the volume being processed and
provides recovery instructions. Follow the instructions to recover from the
inquiry or escape message.
The most common inquiry and escape messages that occur with virtual tape
storage are:
Inquiry messages
- CPA4262
- Volume &5 on device &4 is write protected (C R).
- CPA6745
- Volume on device &4 is write protected (C R).
- CPAB8E6
- Device &1 cannot be varied off at this time.
- This message is sent when an attempt is made to vary off an independent
disk pool containing a virtual volume that is in use by an active virtual
tape device. The Work with ASP Jobs (WKRASPJOB) command can be used to determine
which jobs are using the independent disk pool.
Escape messages
- CPF415B
- Device list not correct. Multiple device descriptions cannot be specified
when virtual tape is used.
- CPF41B0
- Incorrect image catalog name specified.
- CPF41B3
- No more volumes to mount from catalog. You specified VOL(*MOUNTED) and
the last accessible virtual tape volume in the catalog was already used and
unloaded.
- CPF41B4
- Virtual tape volume not available. The specified volume is in unloaded
status.
- CPF41B5
- Virtual tape volume not found.
- CPF4371
- Device not operational.
- This message is sent when an unexpected error occurs. Possible causes
are:
- The virtual volume stream file was removed while in use.
- A forced vary off operation was performed on an independent
ASP containing a virtual tape volume that was in use.
It is necessary to vary the virtual tape device description off and
back on with the VRYCFG command with the RESET(*YES) parameter
to clear the error.
- CPF4373
- End of media on device.
- This message is sent when the storage threshold of the ASP containing
the virtual tape volume exceeds the maximum allowed storage for virtual tape,
or when the maximum storage allowed threshold of the user profile that owns
the virtual tape volume is exceeded, and additional storage cannot be allocated
to continue the operation. The default maximum allowed storage for virtual
tape is the greater of 95% or 5 GB of free space remaining in the ASP. The
catalog ASP threshold value can be used to change the maximum allow storage.
- CPF6760
- Device &1 is not ready.
- This error is reported when the requested virtual volume
cannot be mounted. Typically this error occurs when the requested virtual
volume is already mounted in a different virtual device through a reference
or a dependent image catalog, and the mount is not allowed.
- CPF67F5
- Duplicate cartridge or virtual volume name found.

Diagnostic messages
- CPDBC04
- Error on command &3 during virtual tape function &2. Reason code
26.
- Reason code 26 is sent when a command to mount or change a virtual volume
cannot be processed because the volume is currently mounted in a device. The
volume needs to be unloaded or unmounted from the device it is currently in
before the command can be completed.
Note: If the virtual volume was used by another partition and
left mounted, then there may not be any image catalogs that show that the
volume is in a mounted status. The CHKTAP command with ENDOPT(*UNLOAD)
can be used to unload the virtual tape volume.
