dasd tool causes compute node hanging with error: SORRY - NO VALID SENSE error on compute node

Known issue of concurrent deployment failure

IBM® Cloud Infrastructure Center depends on other software stack such as operating system. Review and be aware of the following important notice:

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux® 7.6

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux® 7.7

Issue description

When you run the dasd tool for disk operation on the compute node, the tool may enter into an endless loop situation after read unit address configuration. From the system log file /var/log/messages, there are many such errors reported: Failing CCW: (null)#012dasd(eckd): SORRY - NO VALID SENSE AVAILABLE. The compute node does not respond when this issue happens.

Resolution

Refer to Red Hat RHBA-2020:1016 - Bug Fix Advisory to update this kernel security, bug fix, and enhancement update.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux® 7.8 also contains the fix, alternatively updating the compute node to Red Hat Enterprise Linux® 7.8 is recommended.

This is a known issue and is tracked as bug 180033.

Workaround

A customer managing a cloud will have to sequentially trigger the provisioning guest(s) request instead of concurrent deployment.
