Upgrading the load source disk unit without disk protection

This checklist shows the sequence of tasks to upgrade your load source disk unit (unit 1) with a disk unit that has at least a 70-GB capacity. The disk units that are replaced in this procedure are discarded.

Print a copy of this checklist. Check off the configuration tasks as you perform them. This checklist provides an important record of your actions. It may help you diagnose any problems that occur.

Before you begin

Evaluate your disk configuration and record your answers. The information entered in the Before you begin table is needed to answer the questions in the Load source planning section.

Where is the load source disk unit located?

Determine the disk unit locations using Dedicated Service Tools (DST) or System Service Tools (SST).

  1. From either Use Dedicated Service Tools (DST) or System Service Tools (SST) display, select Work with disk units.
  2. From the Work with Disk Units display, select Work with disk configuration.
  3. From the Work with Disk Configuration display, select Display disk configuration.
  4. From the Display Disk Configuration display, select Display disk configuration status.
  5. Write down the resource name (example DD001) of the load source disk unit (unit 1).

  6. From the Dedicated Service Tools (DST) or System Service Tools (SST) display, select Start a Service tool.
  7. From the Start a Service Tool display, select Hardware service manager.
  8. From the Hardware Service Manager, select Locate resource by resource name.
  9. Enter the first resource name that was written down in step 5 and press Enter.
  10. From the Logical Hardware Resources display, select Associated packaging resource(s).
  11. From the Packaging Resources Associated with a Logical Resource display, select Display detail.
  12. Write down the Physical location information for the load source disk unit.

  13. The physical location can be found by referencing the map located inside the front door of the IBM® i or expansion tower.
Tip: Mark this disk unit with tape to remember its location.
 

Load source planning steps

Answer the questions below. If you answer Yes to all of these questions, you can perform the Load source disk unit upgrade. However, if you answer No to any of the questions, call your next level of support to perform this upgrade.

Task What to do
1.___ Back up your system using the GO SAVE command.
2.___ Turn off your system or logical partition by entering the following command.
PWRDWNSYS *IMMED RESTART(*NO)
The Power Down System (PWRDWNSYS) command prepares the partition to end. Use the immediate (*IMMED) value to end all active jobs immediately and use the RESTART (*NO) value to power off the partition so that you can install disk units in the next task.

Install the replacement disk unit or assign a virtual storage LUN.

  1. If you are not using a virtual storage LUN for the replacement unit, ensure that there is an open disk slot.
  2. Install the replacement disk unit on your system.
    Notes:
    1. Ensure that the disk unit being installed has at least a 70-GB capacity and has the same or greater capacity than the existing load source disk unit.
    2. It is recommended that you mark this disk unit with tape to remember its location. Mark this disk unit differently than how you marked the existing load source disk unit.
4.___ Work with Dedicated Service Tools (DST).
  1. Power on your system or logical partition to Dedicated Service Tools (DST).
    Note: Verify that you are in manual mode before you power on your partition.

Copy the load source disk unit (unit 1) to the designated replacement disk unit.

  1. On the Use Dedicated Service Tools (DST) menu, select Work with disk units.
  2. On the Work with Disk Units display, select Work with disk unit recovery.
  3. On the Work with Disk Unit Recovery display, select Copy disk unit data.
  4. Type 1 next to load source disk unit (unit 1) and press Enter.
  5. Type 1 next to the disk unit that you installed in task 3.
  6. Write down the serial number of the replacement disk unit that is going replace the load source.

  7. Press Enter in the Confirm Copy Disk Unit Data display.
  8. The status display shows how the operation is proceeding. When the function is complete, the partition will automatically IPL to the Use Dedicated Service Tools (DST) menu.
6.___ Turn off the system or logical partition.
  1. On the Use Dedicated Service Tools (DST) menu, select Start a service tool.
  2. On the Start a Service Tool display, select Operator panel functions.
  3. Use function F10 to power off the partition and press Enter.
Note: There is no command line because you are using Dedicated Service Tools.
7.__ Physically remove the disk unit.
  1. Physically remove the original load source disk unit (unit 1) that you identified in the Disk configuration questions.
8.__ If the system has a Hardware Management Console (HMC) and the disk unit that you installed in task 3 is under a different IOA than the original load source disk unit, use the HMC to change the I/O tag.
  1. In your HMC, expand Systems Management > Servers.
  2. Select the system.
  3. Select the check box for the partition.
  4. From the menu for the partition, click Configuration > Manage Profiles.
  5. In the Managed Profiles pane, click the profile name.
  6. In the Logical Partition Profile Properties pane, click the Tagged I/O tab.
  7. From the Load source list, select the IOA that you want to control the Load Source disk unit.
  8. Click OK.
9.__ Work with Dedicated Service Tools (DST).
  1. Power on your system or logical partition to Dedicated Service Tools (DST).
10.__ Examine the configuration.
  1. On the Use Dedicated Service Tools (DST) menu, select Work with disk units.
  2. On the Work with Disk Units display, select Work with disk configuration.
  3. On the Work with Disk Configuration display, select Display disk configuration.
  4. On the Display Disk Configuration display, select Display disk configuration status.
  5. Examine the configuration information to ensure that the load source disk unit (unit 1) is the replacement disk unit that you installed in task 3.
  6. Verify the load source serial number.
11.__ IPL your system to IBM i.

If this procedure has been completed correctly, your load source will be upgraded.
