Creating a promotion scope

Before you begin

A promotion scope defines which CIs are included when you promote actual CIs. The promotion scope is associated with the authorized CI type to which you are promoting the actual CIs. It includes the CI Types, directly or indirectly related to the top-level authorized classification, that can be promoted at the same time. Every CI Type that you want promoted must be included and mapped in a promotion scope, as described here.

The starting point of a promotion scope must always be on an Authorized CI classification that has the top level flag turned on. A top-level authorized CI classification can easily be found by looking in the model navigator for the top-level decorator on the model icon. However, just being a top level Authorized CI classification does not necessarily mean that the Authorized CI classification is the starting point of a promotion scope. A starting point depends on the users business processes and what Actual CI classification types are deemed most important. Many promotion scopes use a computer system or a network device as a starting point.

Note that the promotion scope is created when you save the contents of the editor. After you have created and saved a promotion scope, you can reopen it for further editing. To edit an existing promotion scope, locate the authorized CI classification that is the starting point for the promotion scope in the model navigator. Right-click the name and select Open with > Promotion scope editor.

Follow these steps to create a new promotion scope:

Procedure

  1. Choose the authorized CI classification that you will use as the starting point for the promotion scope. Locate this classification in the model navigator.
  2. Right-click the name of the classification and select Create promotion scope from the context menu.
The promotion scope editor opens, and contains a single mapping for the starting point of the promotion scope. This editor contains two tables. The first table contains the mappings within the promotion scope, while the second contains the relationship rules.
  3. Add authorized CI classifications that you have created to the promotion scope.
  4. Edit the relationship rules that are part of the promotion scope.
