New in 8.10.4 Session Timeout settings

Set the amount of time for session timeouts and warning displays. This feature is available for only the rule artifacts: action rules, decision tables, functions, and technical rules.

Table 4. Session Timeout setting
Setting Use
Maximum time of session inactivity (minutes) Enter the maximum time of inactivity before the session times out. Clicking Reset clears the setting and the value of the application server is used.
Delay for timeout warning (minutes) Enter the delay for displaying the warning message for the session timeout. Set the delay time to less than the maximum time of inactivity before the session times out. If left undefined, default value is one third of the max inactive interval.
Save open rule artifact before timeout Specify whether to save automatically a new version of the currently edited rule artifact (action rule, decision table, function or technical rule) before a session timeout occurs.

The Business console automatically logs out the user when a session is inactive for a certain amount of time. The timeout applies to the Business console and not HTTP activity. The timeout does not occur when the Business console is in use, even when no HTTP request is sent to the server. The amount of inactivity time is defined by the maxInactiveInterval parameter of the HTTP session on the server. By default, this parameter is defined in the application server.

Note: The inactivity period refers to the time during which the Business console is not active. It is not only the HTTP session inactivity, which is the period in which no HTTP request is sent to the server, but also the web browser activity. If the user performs any browser action, for example, clicking an item, scrolling, or typing in values, the timeout is reset. The timeout does not expire while the user is interacting with the Business console, even when no HTTP request is sent to the server.

To use the timeout settings, if you set Maximum time of session inactivity to 30 min and Delay for timeout warning to 10 minutes, a warning message is displayed after 20 minutes of inactivity, or 10 minutes before the timeout.

When the timeout warning is displayed, it offers two options:

  • Continue: Click to resume your work, and reset the timeout to 30 minutes.
  • Disconnect: Click to log out of the current session. Any unsaved work is lost.

If no option is used, the dialog stays open until the timeout occurs. Then, if the Save open rule artifact before timeout setting is on, a new version of the currently open artifact is saved if it has been modified. The new version also gets a predefined comment: This version has been automatically created before a session timeout. Automatic saving occurs two minutes before the session expires to ensure enough time for the operation. For this operation, the warning dialog opens two minutes before the timeout by default.
