Configuring Bitvise WinSSHD

You can use Bitvise WinSSHD to provide SSH access to Windows systems.

For gateway-based discovery, Bitvise WinSSHD must be installed on the gateway system. For direct SSH discovery, Bitvise WinSSHD must be installed on each Windows system.

Bitvise WinSSHD is available from http://www.bitvise.com/.

The following steps describe how to configure Bitvise WinSSHD 5.22. The specific steps can differ depending on the release of Bitvise WinSSHD that you have.

  1. To restrict SSH host access to the TADDM server, complete the following steps:
    1. In the WinSSHD Control Panel, click Open easy settings.
    2. On the Server settings tab, for the Open Windows Firewall field, select As set in Advanced WinSSHD settings.
    3. Click Save Changes.
    4. In the WinSSHD Control Panel, click Edit advanced settings.
      The Advanced WinSSDH Settings window is displayed.
    5. Click Settings > Session.
    6. Set the value of the following items to 0:
      • IP blocking - window duration
      • IP blocking - lockout time
    7. Click OK.
    8. In the WinSSHD Control Panel, click Edit advanced settings.
      The Advanced WinSSDH Settings window is displayed.
    9. Click Settings > Access Control.
    10. In the right pane, click IP rules.
    11. Click Add.
    12. Type the IP address of the TADDM server.
    13. In the Number of significant bits field, type 32.
    14. In the Description field, type TADDM server.
    15. Ensure that the Allow connect check box is selected.
    16. Click OK.
    17. Remove the 0.0.0.0/0 entry from the list.
  2. To create and configure a virtual group and users, complete the following steps:
    1. In the WinSSHD Control Panel, click Edit advanced settings.
      The Advanced WinSSDH Settings window is displayed.
    2. Click Settings > Virtual Groups.
    3. To add a new group, click Add.
    4. In the Group and Windows Account Name fields, type a name.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Click Settings > Virtual Accounts.
    7. To add a new account, click Add.
    8. In the Virtual account name field, type a name.
    9. Set a password using the link for the virtual account password.
    10. From the drop-down list, select the virtual group that you created in a previous step, and ensure that the Use group default Windows account check box is selected.
    11. Click OK.
  3. In the WinSSHD Control Panel, click Start WinSSHD.
If you are discovering multiple Windows servers, you might experience the following message:
A Working gateway cannot be found
