Case 4: Structurally damaged CDS, missing journal records

A structurally damaged CDS is typically caused by multiple updates occurring at the same instant in time within the same CDS. Simultaneous updates to the same CDS can occur in a multiple-MVS-image environment, if a job running on one image reorganizes the CDS while DFSMShsm is still running on another image. Without proper share options and serialization methods, the problem of a structurally damaged CDS along with missing journal records can easily happen.

Problems arise when there are no CDS and journal backup versions before the damage. This commonly occurs when damage to a CDS is not immediately detected. As new CDS and journal backups are being created, the older versions are being deleted. By the time the damaged CDS is detected, the backup versions that were created before the error have been deleted.

When you have a structurally damaged CDS and missing journal records, you must work with the records currently in your damaged CDS. To repair your damaged CDS, follow the same steps that Rick followed in Case 1: Damaged CDS, full journal, substituting your damaged CDS for Rick's backup control data set.
