Version 3 or Version 4 volumes can be protected by either RACF or the volume access exit. The volume access exit is entered during open or EOV if a volume is not RACF protected and the accessibility field in the volume label contains an ASCII valid Version 3 or Version 4 character. The exit is bypassed if volume security checking has been suppressed. See Protecting data for more information.
