When you edit a table, the extension variable names and their values and the "Extension variable values scrollable width" are displayed in unprotected fields. You can change the extension variable names and values by overtyping the displayed data. You can use the selection field to enter a line command against an extension variable. When you browse a table, the extension variable names and values are protected, and the selection field is unavailable.

The extension variable values are displayed in scrollable fields with a scale indicator displayed below the column heading. You can use the RIGHT and LEFT primary commands to horizontally scroll through one of the values. You can enter the EXPAND primary command to display the value of an extension variable in a popup window. This popup window also enables you to display and edit data in HEX mode.

The "Extension variable values scrollable width" field initially displays the length of the scrollable width of the field that displays the extension variable values. This length will be the maximum of either:

  • The length of the field displaying the values. This length depends on the width of the screen. For example, if the screen has a width of 80 characters the field will have a length of 65 characters. For a screen with a width of 132 characters the field will have a length of 117 characters.
  • The length of the largest value for the extension variables displayed.

If you need to lengthen the value for an extension variable beyond the scrollable limit, you can use this field to enter a numeric value to increase the scrollable width of the field. You can then use the EXPAND primary command (F4) to update the value of the extension variable.
