You modify an edit profile by entering commands to set various modes, options, and temporary lines. Whenever you change an edit profile value, ISPF saves the value (unless the edit profile is locked). The next time you edit data using the edit profile, the data is retrieved and the environment is set up again. This is easier than it sounds. First, there are defaults for all the modes, and, in most cases, you do not need to change them. Second, if you decide that you want to change a mode, you just enter the appropriate command.
