Starting sendmail

If you use IP PrintWay™ to send print output to email destinations, start z/OS UNIX sendmail if you want to:

  • Send output to sendmail alias names
  • Receive sendmail messages, for example messages about bounced emails

If neither of these conditions apply, you do not need to start sendmail.

If you start sendmail, start it as a daemon so that you can receive messages. Use the -bd option to start sendmail as a daemon. Use the -q option to specify how often sendmail is to look in its queue to process pending mail.

Example: These commands switch to an effective UID of 0 and start sendmail as a daemon that processes pending mail every minute:

su
/usr/sbin/sendmail -bd -q1m &

To use the su command, you must be permitted to the BPX.SUPERUSER profile in the FACILITY class in RACF®.

Tip: To start sendmail automatically, you can put the sendmail command in the /etc/rc file.

Related information: For information about how to customize sendmail, see z/OS Infoprint Server Customization.
