IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, Version 7.1

Tivoli Storage Manager device drivers

Tivoli® Storage Manager provides device drivers or you can use native device drivers for your operating system to work with non IBM devices.

The Tivoli Storage Manager device driver is installed with the server.

The Tivoli Storage Manager device driver uses persistent reservation for some tape drives. See technote 1470319 at http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21470319 for details.

Device drivers that are acquired from other vendors can be used if they are supplied by the hardware vendor and are associated with the GENERICTAPE device class. Using a device class other than GENERICTAPE with a device driver acquired from another vendor is not recommended. Generic device drivers are not supported in write-one read-many (WORM) device classes.

For more information, see the DEFINE DEVCLASS - GENERICTAPE command.

HP-UX operating systems Tivoli Storage Manager supports the Passthru device driver, which replaces Tivoli Storage Manager's kernel device drivers (tsmscsi) and is packaged as part of the Tivoli Storage Manager server version 6.1 and later. For more information, see Tivoli Storage Manager passthru driver on HP-UX

Linux operating systems

You can use the Passthru device driver with Tivoli Storage Manager, which replaces the Tivoli Storage Manager Linux SCSI device driver. Tivoli Storage Manager Passthru drivers require the Linux SCSI generic (sg) driver along with the Linux operating system to install the kernels.

Install the Tivoli Storage Manager Passthru driver for the following tape devices:
  • All DLT and SDLT (including IBM 7337)
  • 4MM
  • 8MM
  • ECART
  • Ultrium (Non IBM LTO)
  • StorageTek SD3
  • StorageTek 9490
  • StorageTek 9840
  • StorageTek 9940
All SCSI-attached libraries that contain tape drives that are not IBM labeled from the list must also use the Tivoli Storage Manager Passthru driver.
