Shared development environments (shell sharing)

During the installation DB2® Warehouse, Shell sharing might be an option. Shell sharing is the installation of multiple Eclipse-based products into the same package group. The combined functions of those products appear in the same Eclipse instance and use the same workspace.

In DB2 Warehouse, you can share a common development environment with other compatible Eclipse-based IBM® products. For example, you can share Eclipse environments with InfoSphere® Data Architect, Optim™ Development Studio, and Optim Database Administrator.

When you run the installation wizard for the warehouse client component group, you might be prompted to install the product into an existing package group or into a new package group. This page is only visible if the installation program finds an existing package group on your computer. To shell share, choose the option to install the product into an existing package group.
Note: When you run the installation wizard for the warehouse client, if you do not have an existing shared resources directory on your computer, you see the option to specify a shared resources directory. The shared resources directory has nothing to do with shell sharing. The shared resources directory is created to store files that are common across certain IBM products regardless of whether you choose to shell share. The main purpose of the shared resources directory is to save space by installing only one copy of files that are used by multiple products. For example, if Product A and Product B both ship with an xyz.jar file, and you already installed Product A, then another xyz.jar file is not installed when you install Product B (unless the versions of the two xyz.jar files are different).

For more information about shell sharing and product compatibility, see Cross-product shared environments (shell sharing) information about IBM Software on the IBM support website.
