What is Db2 for z/OS?

Db2 for z/OS is a relational database management system that runs on the IBM® zSystems platform.

A relational database is a database in which all of the data is logically contained in tables. These databases are organized according to the relational model. In a relational database, referential integrity ensures data integrity by enforcing rules with referential constraints, check constraints, and triggers. You can rely on constraints and triggers to ensure the integrity and validity of your data, rather than relying on individual applications to do that work.

Db2 is software that you can use to manage relational databases. IBM offers a family of Db2 products that run on a range of operating systems, including Linux®, UNIX, Windows, IBM i, VSE, VM, and z/OS.

z/OS is the main operating system for IBM's most robust hardware platform, IBM zSystems. Db2 for z/OS is the enterprise data server for IBM zSystems. It manages core business data across an enterprise and supports key business applications. Db2 for z/OS supports thousands of customers and millions of users. It remains continuously available, scalable, and highly secure.

With Db2 for z/OS and other Db2 family products, you can define and manipulate your data by using structured query language (SQL). SQL is the standard language for accessing data in relational databases.

This information might sometimes also refer to Db2 12 for z/OS as Db2 or Version 12. Unless a different product, platform, or release is specified, assume that they refer to the same product.

IBM rebranded DB2® to Db2, and Db2 for z/OS is the new name of the offering that was previously known as DB2 for z/OS. For more information, see Revised naming for IBM Db2 family products on IBM z/OS platform. As a result, you might sometimes still see references to the original names, such as DB2 for z/OS and DB2, in different IBM web pages and documents. If the PID, Entitlement Entity, version, modification, and release information match, assume that they refer to the same product.
